What if everything comes to a standstill? How ISO 22301 helps your organization remain resilient
In recent years, we have learned that the world is unpredictable. Extreme weather, pandemics, cyberattacks, geopolitical tensions or blocked trade routes: each of these events can have a severe impact on business operations.
We cannot predict what will happen, let alone what exactly will trigger it. Yet many organizations choose to take the risk, hoping it will not happen to them. There is, however, a better alternative: a method that helps you be prepared without having to develop a separate plan for every possible scenario. That method is laid down in the international standard ISO 22301.
From risks to resilience
ISO 22301 does not focus on predicting or preventing disasters. The possible scenarios are simply too diverse and too costly. Instead, the standard takes a different approach: how do you ensure that your most critical processes are up and running again as quickly as possible, with minimal damage?
The answer: by determining for each core process:
- the minimum level of service you want to guarantee in any situation,
- and the resources that are indispensable to achieve this.
Think of crucial systems, locations, staff or information. By safeguarding those specific resources, you increase business continuity, regardless of the cause of the disruption.
The result is a realistic and workable playbook: a business continuity plan focused on resilience, covering the phases before, during and after a major incident.
Is certification necessary?
A solid business continuity plan can perfectly exist without ISO certification. However, the standard provides a clear structure, encourages discipline within the organization and helps you keep processes up to date.
In addition, ISO 22301 ensures:
- formal document management and version control,
- clear competence management,
- and a systematic approach to testing and exercising scenarios.
And perhaps even more importantly: with a properly certified plan, you demonstrate to customers, banks and other stakeholders that you are prepared. This can strengthen confidence in your organization when it matters most.
Thinking ahead in uncertain times
Business continuity is not about doom thinking, but about foresight. With ISO 22301, you opt for a structured approach that works in any situation that truly matters.
Our business continuity experts are happy to explore what this could mean in practice for your organization.
