Business Central and Shopify: Better integrated, but is it the right fit for your SME?
An online store should generate revenue without adding to your administrative workload. The integration between Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central and Shopify helps achieve just that: Shopify manages online sales, while Business Central (BC) handles inventory, order processing and finances.
With version 29, the autumn 2026 release, this integration is being enhanced further. The main improvements focus on B2B sales and the handling of order changes and returns.
What was already possible, and what's improving?
The existing connector already synchronised products, prices, inventory and customers. Shopify orders could be transferred to BC, with delivery information sent back to Shopify. Multiple online stores, payment transactions and Shopify Payments payouts were also supported.
Version 29 builds on these capabilities:
| Improvement | What does it mean for your business? |
|---|---|
| Enhanced management of B2B companies, catalogues and pricing | More options to offer business customers a tailored product range. |
| Improved handling of order changes, exchanges and refunds | Less need for manual corrections outside the integrated sales process. |
| Greater control over the creation of sales documents for orders and returns | Better alignment with your administrative processes. |
| Synchronisation of tariff codes and country-of-origin information | Better alignment of product information with international sales requirements. |
These are enhancements to existing features, not an entirely new integration. Their availability depends on your BC version and configuration.
When should you choose BC and Shopify?
A strong combination for standard sales processes, but less straightforward when there are many exceptions.
- What works well? Exchanging product, inventory, customer and order data. This reduces duplicate data entry and connects your online store with your back-office processes.
- Why choose this solution? You use BC Online and want an online store with a standard connector maintained by Microsoft, without needing separate middleware for the basic integration.
- What are the limitations? Complex pricing agreements, product configurations and specific logistics processes are not automatically supported by the standard connector. Returns and refunds must also be correctly reflected in your accounting.
- When is it not the right choice? If you use BC on-premises, which is not supported by this connector. Or if your sales process involves so many exceptions that extensive customisation becomes necessary.
Before making a decision, ask for a demonstration of your most complex pricing, VAT and returns scenarios. Also agree on who will monitor synchronisation errors. A standard connector makes integration easier, but it still requires ongoing management.
What is the real cost?
Look beyond the connector itself. Your total costs include Shopify subscriptions, payment processing, any additional apps, setup, data quality, training and support.
The business case mainly comes down to reducing administrative work and errors while processing more orders with the same team. Start by measuring how much time is currently spent on duplicate data entry, inventory corrections and handling returns. This provides a better starting point than simply comparing subscription fees.
Which alternatives are relevant in Flanders?
For a practical shortlist, we focus on WooCommerce, PrestaShop and Magento/Adobe Commerce. These established platforms also appear in Belgian market usage reports. However, this is not a specific ranking of the Flemish market.
| Platform | Worth considering if… | Key consideration when integrating with BC |
|---|---|---|
| WooCommerce | You already use WordPress and want to combine content and e-commerce. | Choose a suitable third-party connector. Hosting, plug-ins and updates require ongoing management. |
| PrestaShop | You want a standalone online store with room for customisation. | Check whether the BC integration supports your complete order, inventory and returns processes. |
| Magento Open Source / Adobe Commerce | You manage complex product catalogues, multiple stores or advanced sales rules. | Expect a more demanding implementation and maintenance process. Magento Open Source and Adobe Commerce are two distinct offerings. |
For these alternatives, you will need to select and assess the BC integration separately. Do not assume they offer the same level of functionality as Microsoft's Shopify connector.
These are just a few commonly used examples, not an exhaustive list. Depending on your sales model, processes and integration requirements, another platform may be a better fit for your business.
What is the most practical choice?
For businesses using BC Online that want to set up an online store that's easy to manage, Shopify is a logical option. If you already have a well-functioning online store, the new features alone are not a reason to switch platforms.
Before deciding, ask for a demonstration based on five real-life scenarios: a standard order, a B2B pricing agreement, an inventory shortage, an order change and a partial return with a refund.
Choose the combination that supports your sales processes with the fewest structural exceptions. It's not the number of features that determines your return on investment, but how smoothly your entire order process runs.
