Until recently, Copilot in Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations mainly functioned as a smart search engine for manuals. With the release of version 10.0.47, this fundamentally changes with the introduction of the ERP MCP Server (Model Context Protocol).

This is not a minor update, but the digital backbone that connects AI directly to your business data.

What exactly is the ERP MCP Server?

Normally, an ERP system works like a fortress: the data is locked away in thousands of tables. When you ask an AI a question, a consultant usually first has to build a bridge (API) for that specific query.

The MCP Server opens the gates in a secure way. Not only the data is shared, but also the context, namely the relationships between tables. As a result, you no longer need to program custom solutions for every reporting question.

For example, the AI understands that an employee is linked to a position, and that this position can in turn be linked to a certificate.

Practical benefits for Belgian SMEs

For a Belgian SME with limited IT capacity, this can lead to significant efficiency gains.

Example 1: proactive compliance management (HR & safety)

In sectors such as construction or the food industry, certificates such as VCA or hygiene attestations are crucial.

Old way:
An HR employee exports a monthly Excel list and manually filters for expiration dates.

With MCP in 10.0.47:
You can ask Copilot, for example: “Show all technicians in the Ghent region whose VCA certificate expires within 30 days and who are not yet registered for the internal refresher course in April.” The AI immediately combines data from the HR module, address information, and course administration.

Example 2: smarter accounts receivable management

Scenario:
A customer in West Flanders requests an additional delivery while the credit limit is almost reached.

MCP advantage:
Instead of opening three screens, the warehouse manager can ask: “Can I release this order based on the payment behavior of the last 6 months?” The AI immediately analyzes the payment history and provides advice, taking into account the outstanding items.

The risks: what should you pay attention to?

No technological breakthrough comes without caveats. For a Belgian business owner, these are three important points of attention.

1. Data hygiene (garbage in, garbage out)

If certificates are not consistently registered in Dynamics 365, the MCP server may draw incorrect conclusions. AI does not improve your data; it mainly makes poor data more visible, faster.

2. Access rights (security)

Because AI has access to a lot of context in the system via MCP, it is crucial that security roles in Dynamics 365 are configured correctly. For example, you do not want a warehouse employee to be able to request the salaries of management via Copilot.

3. The “hallucination” factor

Although MCP significantly improves accuracy, AI can sometimes establish connections that do not exist. Therefore, use Copilot as an advisor, not as the final decision-maker.

The future: version 10.0.48 and beyond

The MCP Server in 10.0.47 mainly forms the foundation. The next versions will build on it.

In 10.0.48 (expected autumn 2026):
The evolution moves from answering questions to performing actions. Instead of only reporting which employees are missing a certificate, the AI could ask: “Shall I immediately send an invitation for the course to these five employees and request the training vouchers?”

The “agentic” ERP:
In the long term, the MCP server could enable AI agents to autonomously monitor small processes, such as inventory optimization based on weather forecasts in Belgium, without you having to ask for it yourself.

Conclusion

The ERP MCP Server transforms Dynamics 365 into a system that thinks along with you, instead of only storing data.

For Belgian SMEs, this means spending less time on administrative searches and focusing more on the core activities of the business.

My advice: activate the MCP server in a sandbox environment of version 10.0.47 and test your most time-consuming search queries. There is a good chance you will be surprised by the depth of the insights.
