Business Central 28: if you have customizations, don’t schedule this update in April
At the beginning of April 2026, version 28.0 of Business Central will land in your tenant. Normally no reason to panic, but this time eight features will become mandatory at once, whereas they were optional until now. And three of them affect areas where many Belgian SMEs have customizations.
The three risk areas
Sales prices
The old pricing engine will disappear completely. Do you have an extension or customization for price lists, discounts or customer agreements? It must be compatible with the new structure, otherwise your pricing will no longer work after the update.
Foreign currency revaluation in the general ledger
The way exchange rate impact is processed is changing. Do you work with multiple currencies and use manual workarounds or customized journal entries? These may conflict.
FlowField calculations
The system will only calculate fields that are visible on screen. Faster, yes, but extensions that assume FlowFields are always pre-calculated may show unexpected behavior.
This is not a theoretical risk: Microsoft will remove extensions that block an update once the deadline is reached.
In addition, the following will also become mandatory: Advanced Tell Me, optimized list search features, new reminder texts, MCP Server access and semantic search.
The dates that matter
| Wanneer | Wat |
|---|---|
| April 2026 | Update available: new tenants receive v28.0 automatically |
| April – September 2026 | You choose when to update. This is your testing window. |
| September 2026 | Postponement no longer possible. Microsoft schedules automatically. |
| October 2026 | Forced update. Blocking extensions may be removed. |
What you should do if you have customizations
Postpone the update until as late as possible within the update window. This gives your partner maximum time to test and adjust extensions. Concretely: schedule the update in your BC Admin Center towards the end of August 2026 and not earlier, unless your partner confirms everything is compatible.
In the meantime:
- Ask your partner now for a compatibility check on the three risk areas
- Enable the features in a sandbox and test: create a quote, run month-end closing, search inventory
- Do not wait until September. By then, there will be no room left to correct issues
Why this is different from previous updates
In earlier releases, you could disable new features via Feature Management. Not ready? No problem, next time.
That option no longer exists for these eight features. They will be turned on whether you are ready or not.
No customizations? No worries, you will benefit from better performance and smarter search capabilities.
With customizations? Then this is the moment to test, not to wait.
Software is never the solution. The process and its correct, efficient execution determine the result.
