Nieulandt Recycling

Customer case

Sector: Recycling

Having accrued more than 60 years experience, members of the Aalst based Nieulandt family have reason to consider themselves experts in the processing of old metals. Today, Nieulandt Recycling, run by the third generation of the family, is a state of the art recycling plant, which processes more than 15,000 tonnes of ferrous and non-ferrous metals annually at an impressive new site. The company has deliberately opted to do things differently for years now, within a sector which frequently receives bad publicity.

The sector is subject to intense competition from both large Belgian companies and small scrap collectors, municipal recycling parks and demolition firms. Scrap prices are highly cyclical and susceptible to various international economic factors. The sector demands capital-intensive investment, which tends to put off new small operators and creates significant exit barriers due to ever stricter environmental standards.

Client requirement

Nieulandt Recycling faced the following challenges:

  • How are we doing compared to others? Do we have the right business model? Is our pricing correct? What is the real cost of each activity we engage in? How significant is the pressure on margins?
  • What is the situation in "our" industry? How do we define existing and new risks and opportunities?
  • What is the best strategy to increase our profitability over the coming years? Should we diversify? What does the future hold for medium-sized operators like us?
  • What should we focus on?
  • How do we put this strategy into practice?
  • What will be the financial impact?

Results

We are now almost one year on. Based on our analyses, company managers Filip and Sanne have introduced several new focal points. A few examples: using our calculation model, they closely monitored their margins, reduced the risk associated with winning large projects at small margins and focused on purchasing specific product groups. This generated extremely positive results by the end of 2016 and a great feeling of satisfaction.

We were consequently extremely pleased to recently receive the following message from Filip and Sanne:

"Your study played a key part in this process and obviously we would like to make you aware of this."
