Client requirement

Ingersoll Rand had a clear strategic goal in mind: to transform materials management into a core competency for every employee. To achieve this goal, a common and operational platform had to be established. There was also a need for a standardised best practice guide for the two independent lines of business within Ingersoll Rand. Finally, several key performance indicators (such as delivery and stock turnover) needed to be improved.

Approach

In order to transform materials management into a core competency for everyone within Ingersoll Rand, APICS provided:

  • a broad framework with the company's operating standards;
  • a Materials Management Playbook;
  • an investment in education and certification;
  • a company policy that encourages materials managers to obtain an APICS certificate in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM).

Results

Since 2010, Ingersoll Rand has completely redesigned its materials management organisation. The company created a standardised organisation structure and outlined distinct responsibilities. It also introduced a skills test for all materials managers, which contributed to a saving of $5,500,000 in labour productivity. The company also recorded positive results in delivery reliability (an increase of more than 86%).
